Shaner Elementary
opened its doors in the fall of 1957 as Southwest Avondale Junior High. It was
not originally part of the Topeka Public School district as the area was
outside of the city limits. Paul Shaner was Superintendent of the three
Avondale schools including West and East Avondale.
Four
years later, because of overcrowding, Jardine Junior High opened and Avondale
Southwest became an elementary school. In 1979 our school name was changed to
Paul H. Shaner Elementary School to honor the man who served as teacher,
principal, and superintendent of the Avondale schools for many years.Shaner
Elementary closed when Jardine Elementary was opened in the fall of 2017.
SHANER EARLY LEARNING ACADEMY:
Shaner is both a State
Pre-K and a tuition based Early Learning Academy. Shaner provides full day
preschool for three and four year old children daily from 8:30 AM-3:30 PM (9:20
AM-3:30 PM on Fridays). We offer a rigorous, research-based curriculum that
prepares students for kindergarten. Our classrooms are taught by certified
teachers and each classroom has a paraprofessional to assist.
There are certain
qualifying factors for students to be accepted into the State Pre-K program. If
a student does not meet any qualifiers for State Pre-K, the student can attend
Shaner by paying weekly tuition.
At Shaner, we provide
special education services for our students who might need them and partner
with Family Service & Guidance Center for additional resources.Shaner offers before and after school childcare
to approximately 30 families for an additional weekly cost. Families enrolled
in the childcare program can drop off as early as 7:00 AM and pick up as late
as 5:30 PM. Since space is limited, registration in the childcare program is
first come, first serve.
